OUR OUTREACH As Christians, we seek to feed the hungry, improve living conditions, and make the world a better place to live. Our church houses the United Churches of Lycoming County office; supports ministries such as the Food Pantry, Shepherd of the Streets, St. Anthony's Center and Habitat for Humanity. We have members who participate in the annual CROP walk for hunger, the Community Awareness program, serve as Diaster Relief coordinators as well as many other community outreach programs. We have adopted a two mile stretch of highway that we keep clean. Ecumenically we are a participating church in the Center City Cluster of Churches as well as being active in the United Churches of Lycoming County. www.uclc.org
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES!
JOURNEY HOUSE Journey House Celebrates it's Graduates On June 15, Journey House will hold it's second graduation ceremony for residents who have "graduated" from Project Breakthrough and Journey House. To date, Journey House has been home to eleven families. This has included 15 adults and 17 children. We have seen 2 marriages, 2 births, plus residents acquiting their GEDs, their driver's licenses, getting jobs, cars and out of debt. There has been an 72% success rate with four families having "graduated" and moved on to permanent housing, four currently residing in Journey House and three families who left the program for variious reasons. Journey House was born of a desire of the congregation of New Covenant to reach out to the city of Williamsport and find out what needs were not being met within that community. After much research, it was determined that housing for homeless families was a real need. During this research phase, New Covenant met up with the Family Housing Alliance. This was a group of 14 local service agencies who had formed an alliance to work on the problems of housing for the homeless in Lycoming County. It was a match made in heaven!! New Covenant joined the Family Housing Alliance, established a non-profit entitled New Covenant Community Connections Inc. and purchased an aparment building that is adjacent to the church So Journey House was born to be a haven for families; families who will enter a mentored program called Project Breakthrough that will take them from homelessness to home ownership. One aspect of Journey House is that we would totally furnish the house for the families. And when they leave, they would be able to take whatever they wanted in the way of furnishings with them. Journey House has an email address if you would like to send for more information or would like to make a donation. Email us at journeyhousenc3@comcast.net
QUARTERS BY THE QUARTER Each quarter (three months) of the year, we donate any quarters placed in the offering plate to a different charity. SECOND QUARTER: St. Anthony's Free Medical Clinic
During the months of April, May, and June 2010 all quarters placed in the collection plate on Sundays will be donated to our neighbor on East Willow Street - St. Anthony's Free Medical Clinic.
The clinic offers free primary healthcare (for 1 ½ hours on Monday evening and again on Wednesday morning) to persons who have little or no health insurance without regard to race, sex, religion, or ethnic background. The clinic is staffed by volunteers. It needs support from the community to help cover ongoing operating expenses.
Be a small part in the fight to solve our current healthcare dilemma. Make the collection plate this this quarter noisy and heavy for St. Anthony's Free Medical Clinic.
MISSION OF THE MONTH: STRENGTHEN THE CHURCH Strengthen the Church, one of four special mission offerings within the United Church of Christ, grows the UCC's future by:
SPECIAL NEEDS ADULTS: A SPECIAL INTEREST OF NEW COVENANT New Covenant is blessed with an abundance of people who work in the field of Special Needs as teachers, case workers, job counselors, etc. We also have a number of special needs individuals within our congregation. So it was natural that a Special Needs Committee has been formed to plan and execute events just for the special needs adults in the community. So far we have held two dances, a summer picnic and the fourth Special Needs VBS. We had 29 "friends" come for a three night VBS. We hope to be able to continue to provide activities for this special population.
We are planning on holding our fifth Special VBS for Special Needs Adults on June 28, 29 and 30 in the evening. Last year we had 29 friends attend and 14 volunteers. It was a wonderful time for all. If you are interested, sign up on the narthex bulletin board and we'll call you about planning for this special VBS. There will be a meeting for volunteers on Tuesday June 22nd at 7:00. |
